5 Large Engagement Rings for Women: Styles to Consider

The best large engagement rings for women pair a centre stone of roughly 2 carats or more with a design that makes the most of every millimetre. Go bespoke if you want a ring built around one exact stone. Choose an elongated solitaire for a clean, modern look. Pick a halo for maximum sparkle, a trilogy for presence across the finger, and a lab-grown diamond if you want the most size for your money.
The difficulty is that listings rarely show what you are really paying for. Carat is a weight, not a size, and two stones of the same weight can look very different on the hand. Price also climbs faster than weight, so the most expensive engagement rings for women are not always the biggest. A huge ring is not automatically a well-made one.
Below are five ways to get a ring with real presence, covering how each looks, who it suits and what to check before you pay. We are A Star Diamonds, a family-run jeweller in Hatton Garden, established in 2016. We have put our own bespoke service first and kept the rest as even-handed as we can.

Toggle1. A bespoke large diamond ring from A Star Diamonds
A bespoke diamond ring starts with the stone, not the setting. It is the best route if you want a large diamond and a ring that is proportioned to it, rather than a stock design with a big stone dropped in.
How it looks and works
You choose the diamond, natural or lab-grown. A goldsmith and designer then build the ring around that stone in our Hatton Garden workshop. You control the shape, the claw style, the band width and the metal. That matters most with a large stone, which needs a secure and well-balanced mount.
The process starts with a complimentary expert consultation, and rings are made in about 2 to 4 weeks. Our quotes are locked for 14 days, so you can compare options without the price moving.
With a big stone, the setting decides whether the ring looks balanced or top-heavy, so design the two together.
Who it suits and what to check
Bespoke suits you if you have a particular stone size in mind, or if the band must be proportioned to a smaller or larger finger. For a sense of pricing, here is the current Engagement Rings range in our shop. Stone sizes vary by design, so check each product page.
| Ring | Price |
|---|---|
| Olivia | £25,500 |
| Yasmin | £19,950 |
| Georgia | £12,300 |
| Azura | £8,950 |
| Amelia | £7,800 |
| Nicole | £5,900 |
| Madeleine | £5,850 |
| Johanna | £5,250 |
With a £10,000 ceiling, five of the eight designs are in reach, from Azura at £8,950 down to Johanna at £5,250. That leaves between £1,050 and £4,750 for a custom change or insurance. Before you commit, note these points:
- Made-to-order rings cannot be returned, so confirm stone, size and metal first.
- Instalments are allowed, provided the full amount is paid before collection or delivery.
- Every ring carries a lifetime manufacturing warranty and free resizing for life.
- A valuation certificate for insurance is provided.
2. A large solitaire in an elongated cut
A solitaire in an oval, emerald, pear or marquise cut is the most efficient way to make a stone look big. It suits a ring with one clear focal point and no distractions.
How it looks and works
Elongated cuts spread their weight across the surface, so they usually look larger than a round brilliant of the same carat weight. For scale, a 2 carat round brilliant measures about 8mm across, and a 1 carat round is about 6.5mm.
These shapes also lengthen the finger, which flatters shorter hands. The setting stays simple, so the diamond does all the work.
Cut shape can make a diamond look larger without adding a single carat.
Who it suits and what to check
This style suits someone who likes minimal jewellery and a modern outline. Elongated cuts often cost less per carat than round brilliants, so they are one of the better ways to buy visible size. A large stone sits higher on the hand, so it snags more easily. Ask for a lower setting if she works with her hands.
- Metal: platinum is naturally white and very hard-wearing. Yellow gold is warmer. White gold is bright but may need re-plating over time.
- Points: pear and marquise tips need protective claws to avoid chipping.
- Grading: ask for a GIA or IGI report that confirms colour and clarity.
3. A halo ring that adds visible size
A halo is the strongest choice when you want a ring that looks large and sparkles from every angle. It uses small diamonds to enlarge the outline of the centre stone.
How it looks and works
A ring of small diamonds surrounds the centre stone and adds millimetres to its apparent width. A 1.5 carat centre in a halo can read as a noticeably bigger stone. A hidden halo is set beneath the diamond. It adds sparkle from the side without changing the shape you see from above.
Double halos go further and are most effective with cushion and oval centres. They give a statement look, though they are busier than a solitaire.
A halo buys apparent size with small stones, which cost far less than one large one.
Who it suits and what to check
Choose a halo if you want the most impact for a set budget, or a ring that stands out in a crowd. It is less suitable for someone who prefers a plain, minimal ring. Small pavé stones collect dirt and can loosen over time, so regular cleaning matters. Our free lifetime cleaning and polishing covers this.
- Ask for the centre stone’s weight separately from the total weight.
- Check that the small stones are matched in colour to the centre.
- Look at how deep the setting sits, since halos can stand proud of the finger.
4. A three-stone trilogy ring for presence
A trilogy ring gives width as well as height. It suits a ring that needs to look substantial from the side and from above.
How it looks and works
A larger centre diamond sits between two smaller stones. The side stones extend the ring across the finger, so the whole piece reads as bigger than a single stone of the same centre weight. Sides can be round, pear or baguette diamonds, or coloured gemstones.
The three stones are traditionally read as past, present and future. That adds meaning for many couples.
Always ask for the centre stone’s weight on its own, because total carat weight includes the side stones.
Who it suits and what to check
This style suits someone who wants presence without a very large centre stone, particularly on a wider finger. A trilogy usually costs more than a solitaire with the same centre weight, because you are paying for three stones. A ring can advertise an impressive total carat weight while the centre is modest.
- Compare the centre stone weight, not just the total.
- Check that all three stones are matched in colour and clarity.
- Platinum holds three stones securely and resists wear well.
5. A lab-grown statement diamond
A lab-grown diamond is the most reliable way to turn a fixed budget into a bigger stone. It works with any of the styles above.
How it looks and works
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds made in a controlled process. They share the chemical and physical properties of mined stones. They usually cost far less than a natural diamond of the same size and quality, so your budget stretches to a noticeably larger stone. They are graded on the same 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.
We offer both natural and lab-grown diamonds, and our lab-grown stones are 100% conflict-free.
Lab-grown is the most dependable way to turn a fixed budget into a bigger diamond.
Who it suits and what to check
Lab-grown suits you if size comes first, or if you prefer a manufactured stone for ethical reasons. Natural diamonds suit someone who values rarity, and they are where the price rises furthest if you want the most expensive engagement ring.
- Ask for a GIA or IGI grading report.
- Compare colour and clarity grades, not only carat weight.
- Expect lab-grown stones to resell for less than natural ones.
Choosing the ring that fits
A large ring is about proportion as much as carat weight. Elongated cuts, halos and trilogies all create size in different ways. Bespoke lets you combine them, and lab-grown stretches the budget furthest. Whatever you choose, check the stone’s weight, grading and setting before you pay.
If you would like to see what is possible at your budget, start with our largest design, Olivia, then book a consultation with A Star Diamonds and talk through the design with our team in Hatton Garden.
